Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) - Lawsuit Evaluation

Stevens-Johnson Syndrome - SJS

Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) is a life-threatening condition affecting the skin in which cell death causes the epidermis (the outer layers of skin) separating from the dermis (inner layers of skin). SJS is closely related to Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis Syndrome TENS, which affects the skin in the same way but can lead to the separation of 100% of the epidermis. SJS is said to be a "milder form" of TENS, affecting up to 30% or more of the epidermis. The SJS Syndrome is thought to be a hypersensitivity complex affecting the skin and the mucous membranes. Although the majority of SJS Syndrome cases are idiopathic, the main class of known causes is medications, followed by infections.

Current SJS / TEN Dilantin Litigation

While many drugs, especially sulfur based drugs, have the potential to cause an SJS Syndrome or TENS, our law firm is currently only investigating / litigating four of these drugs at this time:

  • Dilantin (phenytoin) - an anti-seizure medication used in the treatment of epilepsy.
  • Tegretol (carbamazepine) - an anti-seizure medication used in the treatment of epilepsy.
  • Levaquin (levofloxacin) - an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections such as pneumonia, bronchitis, sinus, skin, and urinary tract infections. Levaquin belongs to a class of drugs called fluoroquinolones.

Different Forms of SJS & TENS

Some forms of Stevens Johnson Syndrome are more severe than others. Erythema multiforme minor is the milder form of SJS and not as serious or deadly. However, full blown Stevens-Johnson syndrome also called Erythema multiforme majoris is much more severe and is usually caused by reactions to medications, rather than infections.  Stevens-Johnson syndrome occurs primarily in children and young adults. Many of these dangerous drugs have been recalled or removed from the shelves because of this discovery, but not before many children and adult users contracted the horrible disease. An adverse reaction to hundreds of different over-the-counter (OTC) and prescription drugs can cause Stevens Johnson Syndrome..
